Liverpool may be forced to rethink their plans to re-sign former Anfield favourite Xabi Alonso after he downplayed suggestions he could return to the club.
Alonso left Liverpool in 2009 to sign for Real Madrid for a fee of £30m, but has recently been linked with an emotional comeback on Merseyside.
The 31-year-old's contract at the Bernabeu is set to expire next summer, with the Reds tipped to swoop for Alonso before then.
However, the Spanish international has revealed that he has made no decision over his future, but did not rule out a move to his former club.
"I have not decided where to play in the future," said Alonso. "At the moment the only certainty is my contract with Real Madrid until 2014.
"My return to Anfield? I had an amazing time during my long experience in Liverpool with the jersey of the Reds."
Recently, Alonso's father hinted that his son missed Anfield and wanted a return.
