Liverpool must decide whether to pay a minimum of £12 million if they are to beat Arsenal to the signature of Swansea and Wales centre half Ashley Williams this summer.
Arsène Wenger had a £9 million bid for him rejected in January, but is expected to renew his interest in the 28-year-old at the end of the season.
Brendan Rodgers covets Williams as successor to Jamie Carragher, who retires next month. If Rodgers can convince owners Fenway Sports Group that Williams is the ideal candidate for the role at the heart of his defence, Liverpool are confident the defender would opt for Anfield.
There are two reasons for this, despite Arsenal being more likely to offer Champions League football.
First, there is Rodgers' relationship with the player based on their period at Swansea City. The Liverpool manager never disguised how highly he rated Williams during their period together at the Liberty Stadium, describing him last season as "one of the top four centre-halves in the country".
There is another emotional pull for Williams as he was a boyhood Liverpool supporter, once citing John Barnes as his footballing hero.
