Simon Mignolet is on a mission to stake a claim to be Liverpool's No.1 - starting in Saturday's opening friendly against Preston.

The £9million goalkeeper is expected to take his Reds bow, along with fellow new signings Kolo Toure, Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto, in the clash at Deepdale.

With Pepe Reina still on holiday following the Confederations Cup, Mignolet knows he needs to grasp any opportunities which come his way.

The Belgian shot-stopper, who declined to reveal whether he has received any reassurances from Brendan Rodgers about the Anfield pecking order, is no stranger to having to battle to establish himself.

"The manager spoke to me about that but it's not really something that has to go outside the club," he said.

"There is going to be competition for places at every club. I had competition back in Belgium and at Sunderland where there was Craig Gordon, Keiren Westwood and other international keepers. I also have big competition with the Belgium national team.

"Everywhere you go, especially when you go to a bigger club, there's always going to be a fight for places.

"It can only make you better and make you stronger in the end. I'll train as well as I can and then in the games be ready to show what I'm worth.

"I'm looking forward to the first game on Saturday and I'll just do my best to play every week. I'm not here to be sitting and resting. I'm here to progress and play."

The 25-year-old is excited about what Liverpool could achieve under Rodgers this season.

"I had three brilliant years at Sunderland and I won't forget that, but coming here is a big step forward for me," he added.

"When I came in for the first couple of training sessions, I saw that everybody is very hungry and ambitious. Everybody wants to take a step forward and push on into the top four and win trophies.

"There's big ambition around the club. I also noticed that from the conversations I had with the goalkeeping coach and the gaffer."
