Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher gave fundraisers racing to raise money for a seriously-ill tot a heroes' welcome.

The Save Amelia-Mae team had completed a  259.9-mile run in just six days from Brighton to Liverpool to encourage people to dig deep and support the drive to send the two- year-old to America for life-saving treatment.

Her parents Angie, 41, originally from Bromborough, and Stewart, said it is the only hope the toddler has of beating her rare cancer.

Jamie was at the finish line at Alder Hey Children's Hospital to meet them and told runners that "they all should be proud of themselves".

Coronation Street's Bruce Jones - who played Les Battersby in the soap - raced part of the final leg and was said to be in tears  as Amelia's cousin, John Murray, gave a speech about why they had completed such a mammoth task.

An exhausted Mr Murray said: "My feet are in bits. But it was absolutely fabulous - the support we have had. We had people join us for the final leg to Alder Hey.

"Bruce Jones ran most of the leg. I gave a speech and he was in tears at the end of it. Jamie Carragher said we should be very proud of ourselves the amount of miles we have done."

The appeal to raise for Amelia-Mae wants to raise £250,000 to take the little girl  to the States for pioneering immunotherapy treatment.ECHO readers are among those who have been giving generously to the appeal total, which  has now reached the halfway mark.

Earlier, Lizzy Caselton, a member of the Save Amelia-Mae team, thanked everyone for their support so  far and appealed for the public to keep on giving to  help the family reach their goal.

Amelia-Mae has the aggressive childhood cancer type called neuroblastoma.

Despite having surgery to remove a large tumour in her stomach, the cancer has spread to  Amelia-Mae's brain and spinal cord.

Doctors in the UK have said there is nothing more they can do, but her family is hopeful that the private Memorial  Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre, in New York's Manhattan, can help.

Angie, 41, said the  treatment they offer has already saved the life of another little girl, 3½-year-old Lilly  MacGlashan, from Dunstable, Bedfordshire.

After the race, she said: "John Murray is a complete inspiration. We know he and the team are going to be feeling very tired and bruised after running so far -  and we can't thank them enough for their love and care for Amelia-Mae. We really have great love for them all."

Amelia-Mae's auntie Julie Ashworth said they were calling Amelia-Mae's supporters "Amelia's Army" and that they had been "overwhelmed" by the response to the appeal.

She said: "Amelia's army is what we call her supporters and they have been unbelievable.

"Reaching the half way mark is spurring us on, it now looks like we can do it."

Amelia's cousins Mr Murray and Coren Forrest, and a team of friends and professional  boxers, including Andy Gatenbey, Joel McIntyre and Liam Griffiths, completed the run.
